Lichen

With no leaves on the trees the lichens stand out as unusual. A lichen is a symbiotic relationship between a fungus and an alga. The alga produces sugars for the fungus. This one is common on birch trees and is called Lacidella elaeochroma. The black spots are the fruiting bodies.
